When Extract PDF page range is the right tool
- A client should see the summary on pages 2 to 4 and the pricing on page 8, and nothing else in the forty-page report.
- A scanned booklet came back as one file and only the fronts are wanted, so it is the odd pages out of eighty.
- A chapter runs from page 31 to the end of the document and you do not want to look up where the end is.
- An expense claim needs three receipts that landed on pages 5, 9 and 14 of the same scan.
- A grant form accepts a twenty-page appendix and yours is pages 61 to 80 of a longer submission.
- A contract's schedule is pages 12 to 18, and the parties before it are not for the sub-contractor reading the schedule.
The forms a page range can take
A number is one page, a hyphen makes a range, and a comma separates the pieces: 2-4, 8 is four pages. A range written backwards, 9-5, is still the pages between them. Leave one end off and the document fills it in — 31- runs to the last page, -4 starts at the first — which is what you want when you do not know how long the file is. The words last, odd and even do the counting for you, and odd, 12 mixes a word with a number happily.
Document order, whatever order you typed
Pages come out in the order they appear in the file. Typing 8, 2-4 gives you pages 2, 3, 4 and 8, not page 8 first, and naming a page twice still extracts it once — the tool says so above the result rather than quietly re-ordering behind your back. Rearranging pages is a different job: extract the pieces you need here, then use Merge PDF to put them together in the order you want them read.
Copied pages, not pictures of them
Each page is copied into a new document as a page object, so text stays selectable and searchable, vector artwork stays sharp at any zoom, and images keep their resolution. Page size and rotation travel with it, so the one landscape chart in a portrait report comes out landscape. Nothing is flattened into an image, which is what print-to-PDF approaches to the same task do and why their results cannot be searched afterwards.

Pages are copied rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable. They come out in document order whatever order you type them, and a page named twice is extracted once. A range past the end of the document stops at the last page and the page says so. Password-protected or damaged PDFs are refused before anything is attempted, and a digital signature does not survive into a newly written file.
The page says so rather than failing. A range that runs past the end, like 5-999 on a twelve-page file, stops at page 12, and a single page past the end is named and left out. If nothing you named is in the document, there is no extract and the reason is on screen.
